Pain Journey Privacy
Last updated: 23 August 2026
Pain Journey is designed to keep your health diary under your control. Your diary is stored on your device. Benchwink does not operate a server containing your Pain Journey diary and cannot see your pain entries, body maps, notes, conditions or medicine records.
This notice applies to the Pain Journey Android app. It does not replace the separate privacy notice that applies when you visit the Benchwink website or buy something from the Benchwink online shop.
Pain Journey is provided by Benchwink Ltd, a company registered in the United Kingdom.
- Company number: 16067502
- Registered office: 124-128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX
- Privacy and support email: hello@benchwink.com
- Website: https://benchwink.com
For personal information that Benchwink receives, Benchwink Ltd is the data controller.
Information recorded in Pain Journey
You can choose to record information such as:
- where you feel pain or discomfort;
- pain intensity, sensation and impact on activity;
- the date and time of an entry;
- notes that you write;
- known health conditions;
- your usual medicines and whether you recorded taking one;
- your chosen body outline; and
- information used to present your diary, calendar, trends and appointment summary.
This may be health information and should be treated as sensitive. It is entered by you and stored in the app's private storage on your device or your cloud only. It is used by the app to provide the diary features you request. It is not transmitted to a Benchwink health database.
You do not need to create a Benchwink account to use the diary.
How information is stored and backed up
Storage on your device
Your diary and profile are kept in Pain Journey's private app storage. Other apps should not normally be able to access that storage. Anyone who can unlock or control your phone may still be able to open Pain Journey, so you should use the security features available on your device.
Android backup and device transfer
Android may include Pain Journey data when restoring an encrypted device backup or transferring your apps to a new Android device. Cloud backup is permitted only where Android reports that suitable encryption capabilities are available. The availability and operation of this service depend on your device, Android version, settings and backup provider.
Android backup is provided by Google or your device provider under its own terms and privacy arrangements. Benchwink does not receive your diary as part of that process.
Portable backups
A portable backup is created only when you request one. It is encrypted using the password you choose and saved to the destination you select, which may be your device, Google Drive or another document provider.
The password is not sent to Benchwink and cannot be recovered by us. If you forget it, the backup cannot be opened. Benchwink does not receive the backup during export or restoration.
You are responsible for protecting and deleting portable backup files stored outside Pain Journey. Deleting information from the app does not delete copies that you previously exported.
Google Play purchases
If you start a subscription or buy a one-time Plus unlock, the transaction is processed by Google Play. Google may process information such as your Google account, country, payment method and purchase history under Google's own privacy notice.
Contacting Benchwink
If you email us, we receive your email address, the content of your message and any technical details you choose to provide. We use this information to answer your enquiry, investigate a problem, prevent misuse and improve Pain Journey.
Please do not email portable backup files, detailed medical histories or other health information. Benchwink support does not provide medical advice.
We normally rely on our legitimate interests in operating and improving Pain Journey when handling support correspondence. Where correspondence is needed to provide or administer a purchase, we may process it to perform our contract with you or take steps at your request. We may also retain information where necessary to meet a legal obligation or establish, exercise or defend legal claims.
Feedback and ratings
The feedback option prepares a message in your chosen email app. Nothing is sent until you choose to send it. A rating is submitted to Google Play and is handled by Google under its own terms and privacy arrangements.
Adaptive app icon
If you enable the adaptive pain icon, Pain Journey may use the average intensity of your five most recent diary entries to change the colour and intensity of its launcher icon. This calculation takes place on your device.
The icon may reveal an indication of your recent reported pain to another person who can see your home screen. The feature is optional and can be turned off in the app. The standard icon is blue.
What we do not do
Benchwink does not currently:
- receive or maintain a database of your Pain Journey diary;
- sell your diary or health information;
- use your diary for advertising;
- include third-party advertising in Pain Journey;
- use behavioural analytics to monitor how you use the app; or
- use your diary to make automated decisions that have legal or similarly significant effects on you.
If these practices change, we will update this notice and make any disclosure or request for permission required before the new processing begins.
Who receives information
Your diary may be handled by services you deliberately use, including Android backup, a device-transfer service or the storage provider you select for a portable backup. Google Play handles purchase and rating information. Those providers act under their own terms and privacy notices.
Support correspondence may be handled by Benchwink's email, website or IT service providers on Benchwink's behalf. Access is limited to what is reasonably needed to provide those services. We do not share support information for independent advertising.
Some service providers may process information outside the United Kingdom. Where Benchwink is responsible for such a transfer, we use an applicable lawful transfer mechanism and appropriate safeguards. You may contact us for further information about those safeguards.
How long we keep information
Diary and profile information remains on your device until you delete individual entries, use the in-app deletion control, clear the app's storage or uninstall the app. Android or portable backups may remain for longer according to your settings and the retention rules of the provider or location you selected.
We retain support correspondence only for as long as reasonably necessary to resolve the enquiry, maintain an appropriate support record, improve the service and meet legal requirements.
Google determines the retention of information it processes for Google Play and Android services.
Deleting your information
You can delete individual diary entries within Pain Journey. The Delete everything control removes the diary and profile information stored by the app after you press and hold the confirmation button for five seconds.
This does not delete:
- portable backups saved elsewhere;
- copies retained by an Android backup or device provider;
- Google Play purchase records; or
- messages you have sent to Benchwink.
You must manage those copies through the relevant provider or contact Benchwink about support correspondence.
Your data-protection rights
Depending on the circumstances, UK data-protection law may give you rights to ask Benchwink for access to personal information we hold about you, correct it, erase it, restrict its use, object to its use or receive a portable copy. Where processing relies on consent, you may withdraw that consent at any time without affecting earlier lawful processing.
These rights apply to information Benchwink holds. Benchwink cannot retrieve diary information that remains only on your device or in a backup we cannot access.
To exercise a right, email hello@benchwink.com. We may need to confirm your identity. You also have the right to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office, although we would appreciate the opportunity to address your concern first.
Children
Pain Journey is intended for adults. It is not designed for use by children and Benchwink does not knowingly offer the app directly to children. A parent, guardian or healthcare professional should use an appropriate service when supporting a child.
Security
We use measures intended to reduce unauthorised access, including Android private app storage and password-based encryption for portable backups. No storage or transmission method is completely secure. Keep your device updated, use a screen lock, choose a strong and unique backup password, and store backup files carefully.
Changes to this notice
We may update this notice when Pain Journey, our providers or legal requirements change. We will update the date at the top of the page. Where a change materially affects how personal information is used, we will provide an appropriate in-app notice or request permission where required.
