Pain Journey Support

Last updated: 23 August 2026

Pain Journey is a private Android diary for recording where you feel pain or discomfort, what it feels like and how it changes over time.

This page covers the Pain Journey app. For questions about laboratory products or orders from the Benchwink shop, please use the shop's usual contact route.

Important health information

Pain Journey is a personal recording tool. It is not a medical device and does not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any medical condition. It does not predict, triage or recommend treatment, and it is not a substitute for advice from a qualified healthcare professional.

Speak to a healthcare professional if you need medical advice, diagnosis or treatment. In the UK, call 111 when you need urgent medical help but it is not a life-threatening emergency. Call 999 in a life-threatening emergency. If you are outside the UK, use the appropriate local service.

Benchwink support cannot interpret symptoms or provide medical advice.

Getting started

You can make your first entry without creating an account or completing a profile:

1. Open New entry.
2. Choose the body outline that is easiest for you to map.
3. Tap or press and move over the places that hurt.
4. Add an intensity and any other details you want.
5. Select Save entry.

Profile information, notes, medicines, calendars, trends and summaries are optional. You can explore them when you are ready.

Pain Journey requires Android 8.0 or later.

Where is my diary stored?

Your diary and profile are stored in Pain Journey's private storage on your phone. They are not sent to a Benchwink health database.

Android may restore the app through an eligible encrypted device backup or device-to-device transfer. This depends on your phone, Android settings and backup provider.

What happens if I leave an unfinished entry?

Pain Journey keeps the selections from an unfinished entry while you visit another tab in the app. Return to New entry to continue. The entry is not added to your history until you select Save entry.

How do I edit or delete a diary entry?

Open History and select the relevant entry to view its details and saved maps. Use the entry's secondary actions to delete it. Deleting an entry also removes it from the calendar and trends.

If an entry still appears after deletion, close and reopen the relevant screen. If the problem continues, contact us with the app version and device model, but do not send the contents of the entry.

How do I delete all diary and profile information?

Open Admin, find the deletion section and select Delete everything. On the confirmation screen, press and hold the red button continuously for five seconds.

This removes diary entries, known conditions and usual medicines stored by the app. It does not cancel Plus, remove Google Play purchase records or delete portable backup files saved elsewhere.

Deletion cannot be undone unless you have a usable backup.

How do I move Pain Journey to a new phone?

There are two possible routes:

Android restore or device transfer

When setting up the new Android phone, use the same Google account and choose to restore or transfer your apps and data. Availability depends on the phones and their backup settings.

Portable backup

On the old phone:

1. Open Admin in the Pain Journey app.
2. Select Create portable backup.
3. Choose a strong password of at least eight characters.
4. Save the file somewhere you will be able to reach from the new phone.

On the new phone:

1. Install Pain Journey.
2. Open Admin and select Restore portable backup.
3. Choose the backup file and enter its password.
4. Select Merge to add entries that are not already present, or Replace to replace the current diary with the backup.

Keep the backup until you have checked the restored diary.

I forgot my backup password

Benchwink does not receive or store portable-backup passwords and cannot reset or recover them. You will need the correct password or another usable copy of your diary.

A backup will not open

Check that:

- you selected a Pain Journey portable backup;
- the file finished copying or downloading;
- the password is exactly the one used when the backup was created; and
- the file has not been renamed, edited or damaged by another program.

If you still have the original phone, create a new backup with a new password and try restoring that file.

Do not email the backup to Benchwink. It may contain sensitive health information and we cannot unlock it for you.

How does Plus work?

The core diary remains available without Plus. New users receive a 30-day preview of Plus features. The app explains which features require Plus when the preview ends.

Pain Journey may offer:

- a monthly subscription, which renews automatically unless cancelled; and
- a one-time Plus unlock.

The current price, billing period and any offer are displayed by Google Play before you confirm a purchase. Google Play handles payment.

How do I restore Plus?

Install Pain Journey through Google Play while signed in to the Google account that made the purchase. Open the Plus or Admin area and allow the app to refresh the purchase. Check that Google Play is online and using the correct account.

A one-time unlock is associated with the purchasing Google account, subject to Google Play's rules. It does not require a Benchwink account.

If access does not return, restart the app and check the purchase in Google Play. When contacting us, include the app version and the Google Play order number if available, but never send payment-card details or your Google password.

How do I cancel a subscription?

Open Google Play, select your profile, then Payments and subscriptions and Subscriptions. Select Pain Journey and follow Google's cancellation steps.

Uninstalling Pain Journey does not cancel a subscription. Cancelling normally prevents the next renewal; access generally continues until the end of the paid period shown by Google Play.

Purchases and refunds

Payments, cancellations and refund eligibility are administered through Google Play and are subject to Google Play's terms and applicable consumer law. Benchwink cannot see your full payment-card details.

What does the changing app icon mean?

The optional adaptive icon reflects the average intensity of your five most recent diary entries. Lower recent values use a calm blue version; the icon becomes warmer and more intense as the average increases.

This is only a visual reflection of what you recorded. It is not a medical assessment or warning. The calculation happens on your phone.

You can disable the feature in Admin to use the standard blue icon. Consider leaving it disabled if another person may see your home screen and you do not want the icon to suggest anything about your recent pain.

Display or scrolling problems

Pain Journey is designed for phones, tablets and folding devices. If something is clipped or cannot be reached:

1. Install the latest available app update.
2. Return the phone's display size and font size to their default temporarily.
3. Rotate or unfold the device and try again.
4. Close and reopen Pain Journey.

If the issue continues, tell us the phone or tablet model, Android version, display or font-size setting, app version and the screen affected. A screenshot is useful only if it contains no diary or health information.
